Social Studies and ELA

Dear Parents,

In Social Studies we are deep inside the constitution. WE are focusing on 1) The purpose
                  2) The structure
                  3) The content
of the 5000 words that structure and run our country.

We are looking inside the actual words of the constitution, to work on our document skills, as well as making connections to apply the ideas to how our country runs today.

At the left you can see our on version of a preamble to a class constitution, based on the style our founding fathers chose.

In ELA we have finished our second short story, and are working on an analysis piece of writing, connecting the themes seen in each, and contrasting the way each story brings it out.

We did a fantastic job presenting our book reports to the class, as well as critiquing and asking questions of our class-mates presentations.

Math Class

We continued our chapter on integers, learning now how to subtract integers. We discussed real life applications of subtracting integers. We understood what it means to "subtract a negative" and why when we subtract a negative we end up adding the numbers. We used multiple modalities to subtract negatives. Students can use number lines, counters, or the rules that we learned. 
We ended the week reviewing for the Math Test.

JUDAIC STUDIES

Dear parents,

Welcome to 7th Grade Judaic Studies Class!

After an intensive week and a half of classes and a return to routine, I got to know the girls from a teacher's perspective as well as on a personal level. I am honored to have such wonderful, warm, motivated students that ask excellent questions that enrich our class. They made a very strong impression on me. 

WHAT WE DID THIS WEEK:

In the Judaic Studies category, we have thus far learned about the Hebrew month of Elul, which leads up to the auspicious holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. In addition, we began to study the Mishna, it was an introduction to the topic for all the girls and we are very excited to embark on this journey into the Mishna. The Mishna is the first compilation of the oral law, authored by Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi (approx. 200 C.E.); the germinal statements of law elucidated by the Gemara, together with which they constitute the Talmud; also, a single statement of law from this work.    

WHAT WE HAVE IN STORE FOR THE COMING WEEK:

This week we plan to cover the meanings, the customs, the mitzvot and what is relevant for the children regarding Rosh Hashana, both from the perspective of Jewish Law as well as from the Mishna's perspective.

ELA & SOCIAL STUDIES

Dear Parents,

As we end the first month of school, we can look back at how much we have already accomplished!

In social studies we have finsihed our geography unit, and are starting to look at the background of how we became a country.

We had a chance to think about, and argue for what things we think are essential and needed in running a country, and what things we could do without, and would not want. The thoughts shared were thought provoking and deep.

In ELA we have been looking at techniques authors use to show characterization, and trying to employ these tchniques in our own writing, through the grammar constructs of dialogue. We look forward to sharing our stories next week.

Please make sure your child is reading a little every night, leading up to our big theme presentation!

Our newspaper staff, and student government representatives are in full work mode, working to make our school a better place, and to provide a voice for us all.
